- This study examines how differences in job tasks contribute to Japan's gender wage gap. Using an original worker survey with detailed questions on daily tasks, we construct a task-distance measure and match each man to the woman with the closest task profile, allowing us to isolate the role of tasks in explaining wage differences. Our matching procedure reveals a notable gender imbalance: many women remain unmatched to any men, suggesting systematic gender sorting into distinct task categories. However, even after aligning task distributions across genders through this matching approach, the wage gap shrinks only modestly. This finding indicates that task differences account for a limited portion of the overall gender wage gap.
