The seminar explores the political-security dynamics of the South Atlantic, focusing on Brazil's capacity to act and its perception as a leader in this strategically significant region. This presentation examines the geopolitical importance of the South Atlantic, Brazil's foreign policy objectives, and its material capabilities. Special emphasis is placed on how regional countries perceive Brazil's leadership, complemented by a comparative analysis of the influence exerted by major global powers in the South Atlantic.
The discussion is based on an analysis of defense and foreign policy documents from Brazil and South Atlantic nations, including South Africa, Uruguay, Argentina, and Namibia, as well as data on defense cooperation initiatives. It also examines the influence of key extra-regional actors, such as China and the United States, whose activities have played—and continue to play—a significant role in shaping the dynamics of the region.
