Terrorist Organization as a Firm and Counter-Terrorism Measures: An Overview
Speaker
Satya P. DAS (University of South Florida)
Abstract
This is a non-technical seminar, while it will contain descriptive and analytical material on terrorism, and counter-terrorism (CT) measures. Descriptives include the list of terror-prone countries or regions, major terrorist organizations and the so-called four waves or modern terrorism (a la Robert Rapoport) beginning in the latter half of the 19th century. Analytically, a terrorist organization is viewed as a network--which uses various concepts from network or graph theory—or as a neoclassical firm that attempts to maximize its surplus, which is defined in terms of its objective function and costs. The latter approach is much more common than the former (network) approach. The terrorist-firm approach is utilized to shed light upon how various types of CT measures may work, how they may be designed to win the "war on terror". If time permits, the seminar will cover the link between religion and terrorism, cyber terrorism and empirics-based "root" causes of terrorism.
