Topic
Globalization of Firms and the Gender Wage Gap (co-author with Ayumu Tanaka)
Speaker
Theresa GREANEY (Department of Economics, University of Hawaii)
Abstract
In Greaney and Tanaka (2021), we find that the residual gender wage gap is much lower in foreign-owned firms operating in Japan than in Japanese-owned firms that service the domestic market only. We continue this line of inquiry into cross-border influences on workplace gender inequality by using recent panel data to examine whether foreign acquisition leads to increases in female shares of corporate directors, managers and employees. We also explore the influence of recent policy changes in Japan that seek to improve labor market gender equality.
