- Abstract
- The evolution of ICT has altered business communications, particularly after the emergence of the internet in the 1990s. We examine the multi-year differences in U.S. daily business trips taken by internet-savvy vs. non-internet-savvy workers. The result finds that the technology use can both substitute and complement business travel, and the net impact is heterogeneous by trip maker occupation and stage of technological advancement. Internet-savvy professional and managerial workers traveled significantly less frequently and shorter distances than non-savvy counterparts did in 2009. The decrease in business travel is relatively smaller for internet-savvy sales and service workers than for non-savvy counterparts. By 2017, internet-savvy sales and service workers traveled less frequently and shorter distances than they did nearly a decade earlier; but still traveled significantly more often and longer distances than their non-savvy counterparts. Given that it might take years to revive business activities due to the COVID-19 crisis, the results of this study are essential for understanding further digital transformation during and after the pandemic.
