Topic
The Weak Nexus between Small and Medium Factories and Large Factories in India's Assembly Industries

Abstract
This presentation focuses on the present structure of supply chain in the four assembly industries in which multi-tier subcontracting systems have developed after economic reforms. Factories are classified into three sizes—large, medium and small—depending on the average number of workers. The nexus between small and medium factories is strong. While growth in production of small factories depends on inputs consumed by medium factories in the same state, the former contributes to the growth of production of medium factories. Interdependence between the two is observed. However, the nexus between small and large factories is weak. Since 2011–12, the value of products of small factories at 2004–05 prices declined. This suggests that large factories are not using parts and components produced by small factories. A small portion of medium factories are supplying their products and manufacturing service to large factories through merchant contract and contract work. At present, small factories are not engaged in supply chain of final assemblers in the four assembly industries. There is a discontinuity between large factories and micro, small and medium enterprises.
