How Much Does KIBS Contributes to Innovative Performance of Manufacturing Firms in China?: An Empirical Study Based on Production-based Knowledge Flows

Abstruct
It is well theorized that knowledge-intensive business service (KIBS) firms can be important knowledge sources and contribute to innovation capacity in manufacturing industries, and the majority of study by which try to assess the effects by which KIBS contributed to innovation of the latter has been conducted by case studies and econometric tests with data both at industry and firm level from developed countries. However, there are very few empirical studies in Chinese context, our study just fill the gap in relevant research. In this paper, we analyze the process that KIBS contribute to manufacturing industries by the input-output framework and addressed the knowledge flows of KIBS from local production-based linkages as well as from cross-regional similarities. We develop a Tobit model specification based on the theoretical analysis and our empirical test uses data for innovation applications across 187,639 manufacturing establishments in China shows interesting findings as following: (i) We find significant, positive spillovers transmitted from locally-production linkages between KIBS and manufacturing firms which turns to be diminishes as the more integration extent of local KIBS and local manufacturing industries, On the contrary, the corresponding innovation contribution from cross-city production linkages between KIBS and manufacturing industries becomes stronger as the more integration of manufacturing industries' production with non-local KIBS providers.(ii) a manufacturing firm with strong R&D ability can better absorb knowledge spillovers of KIBS both from local and cross-city production linkages, Moreover, firms with relative larger size are more likely to make a better use of knowledge from distant production-linkages with KIBS.
