| 論題 | The Effects of Electrification on Production and Distribution in the Coal Mining Industry: Evidence from Japan in the 1900s |
| 概要 | This paper studies how electrification impacted on industrial relations in the Japanese coal mining industry in the 1900s, which were rapidly growing. Since Japan had only poor electricity grid at that time, the electrification meant that factories including coal mines equipped their own private power generation facilities. We find that the electrification considerably improved productivity and increased the number of workers, while it had statistically zero effects on miners' wages and declined labor income share using difference-in-differences estimation. |
