Topic The Effect of Coal Mine Electrification: Evidence from Japan in the 1900s
Abstract This paper studies the effect of electrification in the Japanese coal mining industry in the 1900s, which were rapidly growing. Since Japan had only poor electricity grid at that time, the electrification meant that factories including coal mines equipped their own private power generation facilities. We find that the electrification had statistically zero effects on miners' wages, while it considerably improved productivity and raised the profit rates using difference-in-differences estimation.
