Topic Culture Based Difficulties in Cross-Border M&A
Abstract The process of acquiring a company is in itself a very difficult and complex undertaking. Finding the right company, performing a due diligence and eventually negotiating conditions can be a complicated and time consuming process even when executed within the same country or within a similar cultural environment. A lot of more complexity and potential pitfalls are added, if the acquisition is taking place in a cultural environment different from the home base of the acquiring company. In the presentation I will give a brief scientific background of cultural differences, in particular between Japan and Germany, and their potential impact on M&A projects. Examples from the past of failing as well as successful acquisitions will be discussed and possible strategies for successful cross-border acquisitions derived.
