Topic Endogenous Outside Options and Losses from Potential Gains
Abstract This paper examines the import role of outside options in vertical and horizontal relations. With endogenous outside options, either the upstream or downstream firm could lose from potential gains brought about by positive shocks, e.g., market expansion or technology improvement. This mechanism has wide applications: suppliers' incentives of cost reductions and quality improvements, upstream collaboration under the existence of downstream competition, and technology spillover between suppliers.
