Trade, Urbanization and Capital Accumulation in a Labor Surplus Economy |
| 概要 (Abstract) |
More recently, Pohang Steel Company (POSCO), the world's fourth-largest Korean steel company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 22, 2005 with Government of Orissa to set up an integrated steel plant and a captive port in the Ersama Block of Jagatsinghpur District,
Orissa. In contrast with earlier market oriented Korean FDIs, the POSCO-Indi aprojec thad protested by many anti-POSCO groups. In these context, I will discuss about following issues. Why earlier inflow of Korean FDI into India did not face such hurdles and all of sudden POSCO is facing strong opposition? Then, what is the background and contents of the POSCO-India project? How has been the dynamics of Orissa politics on the issues? What is the origin of protest against the project and what is being asked for? How to compensate the affected peoples and how to approach the resettlement and rehabilitation for them? How to invest and manage the project? |
