 Analysis of the Structure of Economic Space with Intermediate Goods Variety and Its Implication to a Study on Latin American Development |
| 概要： （Abstract） |
We develop a monopolistic competition model of spatial economy in which manufacturing requires a large variety of intermediate goods (I-goods). The economy yields two types of mono-centric configurations: an integrated city equilibrium when transaction costs of intermediate goods are relatively high and I-specialized city equilibrium when it is relatively low. In the former, both manufacturing and intermediate sectors agglomerate in a single city. In the latter, the city is specialized in the provision of intermediate goods. When the economy is in a integrated city equilibrium, it is in a primacy trap such that population growth alone never leads to the formation of new cities. By interpreting I-goods as educated labor service, this theoretical exercise may represent the Latin American reality where the primal cities continues to be the most attractive firm location, despite the increasing degradation of the living condition as the consequence of excessive urbanization. |
