(Abstract) |
The paper analyzes a dynamic economic model of biological invasion where
the natural growth of the invasion is non-convex and the immediate cost
of controlling the invasion depends on the amount of current control as
well as the current size of the invasion. Increase in current control may
not only increase current control cost and reduce future damage, but may
also increase future control cost. The optimal path of invasion is
not necessarily monotonic. When the marginal control cost declines sharply
with the size of invasion, it may be optimal to allow the invasion to grow
before reducing its extent. We characterize the conditions under which
it is optimal to eradicate an invasive species (immediately and eventually)
and the condition under which it is optimal to manage the invasion without
complete eradication.
