A traditional Japanese institution, the Japanese General Trading Companies, while developed in the context of the Japanese business system, need not be interpreted as solely an Asian political system. While it uses the values of relationships in the Japanese system, it also utilizes the universal principles of relational contracting and information in developing and maintaining business relationships for their clients, foreign and domestic. We examine a particular case of a sale of the first Japanese ship to a foreign client to illustrate the importance of relational contracting and information efficiencies that are central to the value of the general trading companies in creating value for their clients. Three types of information issues, conventional assymetric information issues, inability to assign probabilities and values to future events (Knightian uncertainty) and relation-specific information flows, are key to understanding the value of these relational contracts.
