On the magnet effect of foreign direct investment |
| 概要： (Abstract) |
We extend Antras and Helpman 2004 on firm heterogeneity and choice of production location and organizational form to a dynamic setting with FDI uncertainty, in which the risk of investment failure increases with the sophistication of transplant technology, decreases with the infrastructure level in the host country, and evolves over time with the network generated by the multinational firms of the same origin. We formulate the often noted ``magnet effect" of FDI, where an initial wave of industrial migration generates positive externality (information spillover) for subsequent investors, which stimulates consecutive waves of industrial migration. We prove the existence of a stable steady state for this process and characterize the effect of key parameters on the range of industry migration at the steady state. |
