Who should be in charge? Foreign vs. Japanese senior management in German subsidiaries in Japan
概要:
(Abstract)
One of the major questions in International HR-Management literature relates to the decisions of MNEs on whether to send expatriates from the parent country or to employ country nationals in senior management positions of foreign subsidiaries.
If related to current issues, there are a few shortcomings. First, the distinction between transfer from the mother company and local employment contracts is usually not made. Second, the option of traveling executives is not covered. Third, changes in the environment like a more open secondary labour market for mid-career executives in recent years in Japan are usually not considered.
We discuss the implications of these issues for establishing hypotheses on senior management choice and derive a framework for testing them in empirical research.
Our empirical study will focus on German FDI in Japan, also in order to give recommendations to German companies how to deal with this topic. In this presentation, we will present preliminary results gained from interviews with executives of German subsidiaries.
