Using a variant of the Ricardo-Viner model, we analyze fragmentation of manufacturing, outsourcing of services, and immigration of both skilled and unskilled workers. We consider a situation in which (i) fragmentation arises out of the Heckscher-Ohlin factor intensity difference, (ii) outsourcing is caused by increasing returns to scale in production, and (iii) skilled immigrants incur relatively higher adjustment costs than unskilled immigrants. We examine their impacts on the skilled and unskilled labor markets, with a focus on wage inequality. |
