Industrial Re-dispersion: A Synthesis of Chamberlin and Ricardo |
| 概要： (Abstract) |
Two principal types of agglomerative forces are known: comparative advantages and increasing returns to scale. The first is represented by the Ricardian model, and it is believed that an industry agglomerates in a location which has a comparative advantage. The second is represented by the Chamberlinian model in the context of international trade and new economic geography (in short NEG). Recent research of multiple industries in NEG shows that the manufacturing sector disperses when the transport costs are high and re-disperses when the transport costs are small enough. This paper combines the two forces together in one model, and examines how they determine the patterns of industrial location. It is shown that at most one industry disperses in the re-dispersion process. Others agglomerate in a region, whose location is determined primarily by the Ricardian force and secondarily by the Chamberlinian force. Concludingly, this theoretical research suggests that natural advantages are more important in determining the industrial location. |
