Brazilian Economy under the Lula Government |

It is generally said that Lula's administration did start with a very good economic performance. Macro variables such as the exchange rate, inflation, trade and current account are all showing very good signs. Moreover, the country risk has declined sharply since October last year when the presidential election was held. However, it is true that the new government is still facing enormous economic and political challenges. As Lula has been saying all along, he cannot afford to make any mistake. So what are these challenges, difficulties and risks that new government is confronted with? What has fundamentally changed from the previous government's situation? We shall discuss these economic and political aspects of the Lula government and try to get our understanding of the current as well as the prospects of the Brazilian economy. It will not be an easy task for Lula to be re-elected unless his administration can get rid of some of these difficulties. |
