Optimal Current Account in U.S., 1976-2002

| 概要： （Abstract） |
The purpose of this study is to analyze fluctuations in the U.S. current account by deconstructing optimal and non-optimal components with a new method. It is shown that at the beginning of the 1980’s, most parts of the current account in the U.S were optimal. In the end of 1980’s, however, U.S optimal current account deficit was increased. Since the end of 1990’s, the non-optimal part increased again and reached nearly 3% of GDP. Business fluctuations in the U.S and exchange rate fluctuation play an important role for the non-optimal current account. Cyclical movements of the current account are remarkable with periods of boom and this tendency was notable in 1990’s. |
