Exclusive Dealing as a Barrier and as a Catalyst to International Trade

This paper investigates contractual relations between manufacturers and
intermediaries and their effect on international trade. In particular,
we examine (i) whether exclusive dealing contracts between domestic manufacturers
and their agents act as private barriers to trade, and (ii) how equilibrium
contracts change as trade is liberalized. We find that exclusive dealing
acts as a prohibitive barrier to trade when trade costs are high, but as
a trade catalyst when they are low. Trade liberalization may induce domestic
and/or foreign manufacturers to switch contracts. These contract changes
may decrease domestic welfare.
