概要：
(Abstract)

By drawing on newly obtained data on foreign reserves broken down by currency and on historical materials, this paper shows that after the outbreak of World War I the U.S. dollar emerged as a reserve currency for Japan, but its status was subordinate to the pound sterling. After Japan’s departure from the gold standard in 1931, the volume of foreign reserves in Japan declined sharply from the level of the 1920s, due to the outflow of specie money before the abandonment of the gold standard. At the same time, the relative status of the pound sterling remained superior to the dollar. The reasons for the comparative importance of the pound sterling in foreign reserves are examined through various historical materials and data extracted from them.
